Destiny 2 is a video game where one of your mains goals is to earn gear, mainly weapons and armor. Attunement is a great tool to achieve that, as it lets you focus on what to earn at no particular cost.
And once you have gotten what you want? Then you will learn that in order for that gear reach its maximum potential it will need to be improved, which often requires expending supplies. And where can you find them? In your inventory!
Let's go over all of this.
Attunement
When playing Destiny, sometimes you'll want to earn certain, very specific rewards from the activities you are completing. We are here to help with that through Attunement.

Attunement can be found in your Inventory screen and it's a menu where you'll mostly select the type of reward you are aiming for and the activity you want it to drop in. At any time, players can be attuned to one weapon for each Activity type. For example, players can be attuned to Cry Mutiny in Solo Ops, Nightshade in Fireteam Ops, and Better Devils in Crucible Ops at the same time.
Attuning to a weapon means that you will have significantly higher drop chances for that weapon from activity rewards and will be available for all of the weapons in the active loot pools for each of the included activity types.
Attunement is available for all players, with no costs to attune or unattune, and with no limits on changing the weapons that you are attuned to. We hope this system helps you find the perfect weapons for your arsenal.
How to earn currencies and materials
You earn currencies and materials as you play the game, and what you get is often related to the type of activity you are playing. The most common places to earn them are the Weekly Reward Pass, the Weekly Conquest and Challenges, and by completing Solo, Fireteam, Pinnacle and Crucible Ops. All of them are in the same hub: the Portal.
As you will only start worrying about materials and currencies once you have completed campaigns and other expansion-related content, it's a good thing that you will earn most currencies and materials in the Portal; the same place where you will progress your Power level and earn higher tiers of gear.
You can also earn materials from legacy activities and content. As a rule of thumb, the harder the activity, the more valuable your gains. Most of the time, you will earn Glimmer and Enhancement Cores form the activities you play, but the rare infusion and enhancement drops come only from some of them, like dungeons, raids, as well as in destination-related activities like Altars of Sorrow, the Wellspring, or Overthrow.
Inventory
Almost all currencies, materials, consumables, and redeemables are stored in your inventory. Hovering over them will show you what every item is used for in detail. They also have different rarities, like weapons and armor, and they can be stored in your vault, though it's recommended you keep them in your character for ease of access.
The Inventory main screen is divided into four sections and has one more tab accessible in a sidebar. The following items can be found in your inventory:
Accessories
Some activities and seasonal events come with an accessory that must be used to complete certain objectives or create some special items, like Eva's Holiday Oven where you can bake cookies for vendors and allies during The Dawning event. They will be accessible through this menu or through the correspondent event page in the Portal.
Consumables
Where your currencies, materials, consumables, and redeemables are stored. We'll talk more about them in the next section
If you check the left side of the Consumables section, you can switch to another layer where ornaments for weapons and armor will be stored, as well as some legacy weapon mods that have a limited number of uses.
Engrams
Some engrams won't directly decrypt when picked up and must be brought to the Cryptarch to be opened. Up to ten engrams can be stored in this section until you open them, with the remainder going into the Postmaster. Be very careful, though: the Postmaster has a limited storage, and you may lose very important engrams if you don't pick them up and decrypt them.
Wrapped Items
Some very special items require you to open them in this section of the inventory. It's mostly dedicated to Eververse bundles. You can open them in this tab (or return them to get your Silver refunded). Just pay attention to what you are doing, as Eververse bundles can’t be returned once opened.
Currencies
There's no easier way to explain what a currency is in Destiny 2: it's a type of money accepted by the different systems of the game. As basic as that may sound, there are several types of currency that you should know well, starting with the most relevant of them all.
Glimmer
Programmable matter used as the main currency of the Destiny universe. It's used for a huge variety of services, from infusing weapons and armor, to purchasing bounties or materials at vendors. It's obtained by defeating opponents, completing activities, among other methods. Always keep an eye on how much Glimmer you have; it currently caps at 500,000.
Silver
Premium currency tied to real-world money. Silver is linked to the platform you have purchased it on (PlayStation, Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic Games Store). Used to buy items in the Eververse Store.
Bright Dust
Currency used mostly in the Eververse Store to buy certain cosmetics. It's free to earn by completing Seasonal and Reward Tracks, but also weekly challenges.
Ciphers
Ciphers are a special type of currency awarded by vendors and in certain activities.
Exotic Cipher
Earned in Seasonal Passes and other Reward Tracks. They can be used to focus Exotics at the Cryptarch, among other uses.
Osirian Cipher
Rewarded by Saint-14 and while playing Trials of Osiris. They don't currently have a use.
Pinnacle Ops Cipher
Rewarded by Zavala and while playing Pinnacle Ops and other Vanguard activities. They don't currently have a use.
Spoils of Conquest
A currency earned in raids. They can be used at certain raid vendors to buy gear after you have successfully completed a run.
Destination Currencies
While we had other materials and currencies in the past, right now the only type that remains are Dark Fragments. Find Petra Venj in the Dreaming City to use them.
Materials
Materials are critical supplies for Guardians, used to enhance their gear or to purchase rewards or bounties from destination vendors.
Enhancement Materials
Enhancement Core
The base material for enhancing your gear. It's required for Masterwork gear. Included in Reward Tracks, also drops when dismantling Legendary gear, in some activities, and along with bounties. Can also be purchased from the Cryptarch in the Tower.
Enhancement Prism
The rarest, most exotic enhancing material. Required in the final steps when you Masterwork gear. Obtained from Reward Tracks, endgame activities, or purchasable from the Cryptarch in the Tower.
Enhancement Shard
The rarest, most exotic enhancing material. Required in the final steps when you Masterwork gear. Obtained from Reward Tracks, endgame activities, or purchasable from the Cryptarch in the Tower.
Ascendant Alloy
Very rare material used to enhance crafted weapons. Can be obtained from weekly campaign missions in the Throne World and The Witch Queen offensives. Also available at the Cryptarch or Banshee-44 in the Tower.
Deepsight Harmonizer
A strange device that adds Deepsight activation to craftable weapons. Cannot be used on weapons with Deepsight Resonance already available or completed. Raid weapons also require Spoils of Conquest for activation.
Destination Materials
Materials like Phantasmal Cores, Phantasmal Fragments, or Herealways Pieces are linked to the destinations where they can be earned by completing activities, quests, and bounties. Although they don't usually have a use outside their destination, they are key to progress in the expansions that introduced them, so don't delete them just because you are not using them right now: you might regret it.
Some of these destination materials can be exchanged at the Cryptarch for Glimmer.
Consumables
Items with a limited amount of uses that can be earned from vendors, activities, or the Eververse.
Raid Banners
Can be used before any raid or dungeon encounter to allow fireteam members to gain abilities, Trascendence, and Super energy, as well as Special and Heavy ammo. Purchase them from Suraya Hawthorne, at the Tower.
Holochip
Visual effects that other players can see over your Guardian for a limited amount of time. The effects are suppressed while in combat. Once purchased for Silver at the Eververse Store, they can be claimed indefinitely again from Collections. A Holochip Extractor from Collections can be used to stop the effect early.
Destination Consumables
Items like Charge of Light, Tincture of Queensfoil, Hymn of Desecration, or Polymorphic Shellcode. They are linked to an expansion and its associated destination. They have very different effects and are often required to complete certain activities or earn extra rewards from them.
Redeemables
Currencies that can only be used at a specific vendor.
Strange Coin
Rare, warm-to-the-touch coin. Can be exchanged for items, including Exotic gear, from Xûr at the Tower. Earned by completing activities and as part of Reward Track rewards.
Chronologs
Used to acquire past rewards or material items from the Seasonal Archive in the Tower. They can be earned as part of Seasonal, Weekly, and Event Reward Passes.
Destination Redeemables
Items like Terminal Overload Key or Treasure Key that can be used at a specific vendor from a destination for a reward. Read their description to pinpoint where they can be used.
