Crucible Competitive Divisions is Destiny 2's high-stakes PvP matchmaking playstyle where players can test their skills to earn their right to be called the best. Players looking to participate in Division matches should continue reading below for more information on how Crucible Competitive Divisions work.

Divisions

Competitive Crucible Divisions are listed below in ascending order starting with Unranked. Players should note that Competitive Crucible is a skill-based playstyle, not a grind; winning matches will increase a player's Division rating while losing matches will decrease a player's Division rating and possibly drop them to a lower Division.

Placement

Players looking to participate in Crucible Competitive matches will first play a series of seven placement matches before they are placed into a Division. From there, players will need to continue to win matches in order to climb the ladder and reach higher Divisions.

Division Rating

Division Rating is a system we use to determine where players place amongst each other in Crucible Competitive Divisions. Essentially, when a player wins matches their Division rating goes up and when a player loses matches their Division rating goes down. However, there are a few key points to keep in mind about Division rating and the rate at which it increases or decreases:

Division Inflation / Deflation
If a player's Division rating is far below their skill, they'll gain more Division Points from wins and lose fewer Division Points from losses. Additionally, if a player's Division rating is far above their skill, they'll gain fewer Division Points from wins and lose more division Points from losses.
Lobby Skill Level
If a player's skill is far below the skill of other players in the same lobby, they'll gain more Division Points from wins and lose fewer Division Points from losses. Additionally, if a player's skill is far above the skill of the other players in the same lobby they'll gain fewer Division Points from wins, and lose more Division Points from losses.
Player Performance
If a player performs well relative to other players in the lobby, they'll gain more Division Points from wins and lose fewer Division Points from losses. If a player performs poorly relative to other players in the lobby, they'll gain fewer Division Points from wins, and lose more Division Points from losses.

Promotion

Once a player has reached the top of their Division (ex: Gold I, Silver I, Bronze I) they will be placed in a Promotion Series. Players will need to win two of the three matches in order to move up to the next Division. However, if a player fails to win two of the three matches they will remain in their current Division and lose the equivalent of two losses worth of Division Points.

Relegation

If a player finds themselves at the bottom floor of their Division and loses two matches in a row, they will be placed in Relegation Series. In a Relegation Series, players will need to win two of their next three matches in order to defend their standing in a Division. Successfully completing the Relegation Series will keep players in their current Division and gain Division Points per usual. Failing the Relegation Series will cause players to drop to the next lowest Division (ex. Gold III -> Silver I) and lose Division Points per usual.

Decay

Players that achieve the Gold III Division rating or higher may notice their Division rating begin to decay due to inactivity. Gold III Division players and higher will be awarded one Decay Protection Point upon completing a match; moreover, players should be aware that they can only hold 12 Decay Protection Points at any given time. A player's Division rating will begin to decay if they become inactive by not regularly playing Crucible Competitive Division matches. Lastly, every week during the Weekly Reset three Decay Protection Points will be subtracted from a player's total. If a player has less than three Decay Protection Points they will instead lose 250 Division Points.

Additional Information About Decay

What happens if a player is in a Promotion Series when the Weekly Reset occurs?
Players sitting in a Promotion Series during the time of the Weekly Reset will be dropped from the series.
What happens if a player is in a Relegation Series when the Weekly Reset occurs?
Players in a Relegation Series during the Weekly Reset will be dropped from the series (i.e. relegated).
How often does a player need to play a Division match in order to avoid Decay?
That answer is going to vary from player to player. Essentially players will be safe from Decay as long as they have at least 3 Division Protection Points at the time the Weekly Reset occurs. However, if they drop below 3 points, Decay will begin. Whether a player chooses to play enough matches to stock up to 12 Decay Protection Points and not play again for a while or only plays just enough matches each week for the minimum three Decay Protection Points, is up to the player.
